Job Description

Location : San Francisco

Employment : Full-time

The Mission

Make maintaining software as easy as writing it.

The Problem

Developers spend as much as 85% of their time on non-coding tasks like answering questions, triaging issues, reviewing code, and writing documentation.

The Product

To start, we built Dosu as an AI teammate that acts as a first line of defense for ad-hoc engineering requests and incoming issues. Dosu is now the most popular bot for maintaining OSS projects and internal services. It is used by tens of thousands of developers every month.

Next, we are transforming Dosu into a living knowledge-base for software teams. With Dosu developers get the complete, up-to-date docs they’ve always needed.

The Numbers
  • Founded in June 2023
  • Team of 9
  • Raised $9.5M from top investors and angels
  • 3+ years of runway
  • Over 150k developers have interacted with Dosu
  • Installed on over 50k repositories
The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer with experience in developer tools and AI-powered products to design Dosu’s core user experience. You’ll design across the product surface, everything from first-time use and search to structured editing and AI-generated workflows.

You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, product, and customers to identify high-leverage design opportunities and deliver elegant, developer-friendly solutions.

What You'll Do
  • Own end-to-end design execution of Dosu’s core product—from research to high-quality, shipped UI
  • Translate complex AI functionality into clear, intuitive experiences for technical users
  • Create Figma designs for new features that support human-in-the-loop AI workflows
  • Maintain and evolve our design system with accessibility and consistency in mind
  • Collaborate closely with frontend engineers to ensure accurate implementation
  • Run user research with engineers, PMs, and support teams to uncover pain points and test concepts
  • Develop prototypes and sketches to quickly explore and validate solutions
  • Synthesize loosely scoped ideas into tactical, testable design deliverables
  • Define UX success metrics and use them to drive iterative improvements
  • Contribute to product strategy by translating user insights into roadmap recommendations
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and customer success to shape Dosu’s direction

What We’re Looking For
  • 4+ years of experience designing for B2B SaaS or developer tools
  • Strong product sense and systems thinking, especially in AI-assisted UX
  • Experience designing interfaces with technical complexity (APIs, workflows, CLI/Git integrations, etc.)
  • Familiarity with building and maintaining accessible design systems
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work across functions

Bonus
  • Experience designing AI-powered features or content generation tools
  • Experience with designing UX/UI for documentation
  • Experience and interest in visual and brand design
  • Experience working with LLMs or RAG-based systems

Why Join Us
  • Work on an AI-native product that’s shaping the future of internal developer tools
  • Ship quickly and see your work used by technical teams daily
  • Join a small, high-ownership team where design has a seat at the table
  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity

The Team
  • We are a small passionate team of ex-founders, repeat founding engineers, and OSS maintainers
  • We like to delight users
  • We love open source
  • Dosu has been installed on thousands of open source GitHub repositories and has given hundreds of hours back to open source maintainers and their communities
  • We care about building an enduring business — we are not a research lab
  • We have an office in San Francisco in-between Hayes Valley, Mission, and Castro
  • We've raised over 9M from investors and angels

The Perks
  • Be an early member of the team and have an outsized impact on company culture
  • Competitive salary and equity stake for role and stage of company commensurate with experience
  • $140-$200k base salary
  • 0.2-0.5% equity
  • In-person SF office
  • Regular team lunches, events, and off-sites
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Healthcare, Dental, and Vision Insurance (100% covered)
  • 401k
  • Leading edge MacBook Pro, mechanical keyboard, massive monitor, or any other set up you’d like
  • Learn how to pull an espresso and make a latte ☕

The Process

Interviewing is hard. We aim to keep the interview process relatively succinct (1-3 weeks end-to-end), topical to what you’d be working on at Dosu, and—as much as possible—enjoyable.

1. Intro Call (30 minutes / Google Meet)

A casual video call to:

  1. Learn more about you, your background, and what you're looking for next
  2. Share more about Dosu—what we’re building and where we’re headed
  3. Align on how your skills might fit into our team
2. Portfolio/Case Study Review (45 minutes / Google Meet)

We’ll walk through a few of your past projects together. We’re looking to understand how you think, how you approach design problems, and how you collaborate with engineering and product.

3. Live Design Challenge – Interactive (45 minutes / Google Meet)

Instead of a take-home assignment, we’ll do a live design session. You’ll be given a realistic product design task (e.g., designing a UI for an AI-assisted developer workflow) and asked to work through it live while we observe and collaborate. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s to understand your process, how you break down problems, and how you make design decisions in real-time. We’ll debrief together afterward.

4. Onsite (3 hours / In-Person)

Visit our office at 1841 Market St in San Francisco. You’ll meet the team, discuss the future of the product, and chat through how we work together day-to-day. Expect a mix of product deep dives, system thinking, and team culture conversations.

Interested?

Please include your portfolio, resume, and a brief note about why you're excited to design developer tools at Dosu. We’d love to see a case study and or portfolio that demonstrates your process and thinking. Including links to personal creative projects is encouraged. Show us who you are and what you like to do!
