GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
The Sanitation Truck Driver I performs routine and skilled work in the operation of sanitation vehicles and equipment used in the collection and transportation of solid waste, recyclables, yard debris, and other refuse. This position is responsible for safely operating a sanitation truck along designated routes, ensuring timely and efficient waste collection, and performing basic maintenance checks on vehicles. Work is performed under general supervision and in accordance with established safety procedures and departmental guidelines. This role may also involve assisting with loading waste materials and interacting with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following but not limited to:
Responsible for safe and efficient operation of specialized garbage or refuse collecting trucks, specialized maintenance and cleaning equipment or other vehicles.
Loads and dumps trash and refuse when required and covers assigned area or route.
Assures that all debris which falls from dumpster is picked up.
Requests supervisor to notify property owner if dumpster or cans are not properly placed, accessible, or if debris is scattered about dumpster area.
When not operating specialized equipment will assume all duties of Sanitation Worker.
Inspects equipment for mechanical problems and reports to the proper authority.
Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
Maintains equipment in proper working order including keeping equipment clean, reports information for repair, checks items such as tires, mirrors, etc.
Maintains proper schedule in picking up and in hauling refuse to the disposal area.
Removes debris from city right of ways and other City property.
Drives truck to destination & prepares receipts for loads Maintains truck log, according to city regulations.
Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive pick-up instructions.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Knowledge of practices used in the operation of Sanitation Equipment.
Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and precautions in heavy equipment operation.
Knowledge of care and use of motor vehicles.
Considerable skill in operating heavy equipment and constant attention to safety of operation.
Ability to operate assigned equipment.
Ability to carry out simple written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or G.E. D. equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum one year of experience operating medium to heavy equipment.
DRIVER'S LICENSE
Must have a valid TN Class B CDL with a clear driving record. If a candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one within 30 days of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work performed in operating light equipment such as tractors, mowers, bush hogs, sewer trucks, small bulldozers, trucks, etc., and hand tools in a variety of maintenance and construction tasks when assisting other public works departments.
Some heavy lifting and pushing up to 25 lbs. to 50. lbs. required. Subjected to extended periods of physical exertion while shoveling and digging. Good hand-eye coordination is required in the operation of large, heavy equipment, especially when operating around construction on right of ways and in tight situations. Exposed to all kinds of weather conditions and loud noises. Must be able to operate a sanitation truck.
