Job Summary

The Principal Investigator plays a crucial role in leading archaeological and cultural resource management projects, conducting fieldwork, analysis, and reporting to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and project objectives.

Travel: Yes, up to 60% of the time for site visits.

This pay band reflects Chloeta's good faith estimate of the range it expects to offer; Chloeta reserves the right to alter this range if business circumstances change.

  • $80,000-$110,000 per year

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages cultural resource projects, including archaeological surveys, site evaluations, and mitigation efforts, in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Conducts fieldwork activities, including pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, excavation, artifact analysis, and site documentation, to identify and assess cultural resources.

  • Oversees field crews and subcontractors, providing guidance, training, and quality control to ensure the accuracy and integrity of data collection and reporting.

  • Coordinates with project managers, clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to develop project scopes, budgets, and schedules, and to address concerns and facilitate project approval.

  • Prepares technical reports, cultural resource assessments, environmental impact statements, and other documentation for regulatory review and compliance.

  • Conducts research, literature reviews, and archival investigations to support cultural resource assessments and documentation.

  • Stays current on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in cultural resource management and archaeological practice.

  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to project teams, clients, and stakeholders on cultural resource issues, regulations, and mitigation measures.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, including survey techniques, excavation methods, artifact identification, recording, and documentation.

  • Ability to analyze artifacts and eco facts recovered from archaeological sites, including classification, interpretation, and cataloging.

  • Experience in preparing detailed site records, field notes, and maps, adhering to professional standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for spatial analysis, mapping, and visualization of cultural resource data.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing cultural resources, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 compliance, and associated guidelines.

  • Strong writing skills to produce clear, concise, and technically accurate reports, assessments, and regulatory documents.

  • Experience in supervising and mentoring field crews, providing training, guidance, and quality control to ensure the accuracy and integrity of fieldwork and reporting.

  • Deep understanding of CRM principles, practices, and methodologies, with a focus on compliance, mitigation, and preservation.

  • Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders to achieve project goals, resolve conflicts, and address concerns in a constructive and respectful manner.

  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and respect for indigenous perspectives, traditions, and heritage in the context of cultural resource management.

Education and Experience

  • Required: Master's degree in archeology, anthropology, or related field to cultural resources

  • Required: At least three (3) years of working experience with cultural resource projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.

  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to walk for moderate distances on varying trail terrains and uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include snake or insect bites, stings, falling and rolling materials.

  • Ability to drive to work sites.
