Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Refinery Manager/Smelting Expert to oversee the complete operations of our new gold refinery in Lorton, Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient, safe, and profitable operation of the refinery, ensuring the highest standards of quality, environmental compliance, and production output. This role requires a deep understanding of gold refining and smelting processes, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to operational excellence. Initially, this role will also involve hands-on operation of machinery and direct participation in smelting processes, with the expectation of building and managing a team of technicians as the refinery grows. Key Responsibilities: Refinery Setup & Development: Assist in the planning, procurement, and installation of necessary equipment and tools for the new refinery facility. Contribute expertise to the design and layout of the refinery to ensure optimal workflow and efficiency. Operational Management: Oversee all day-to-day operations of the gold refinery, including smelting, refining, and recovery processes. Directly operate refinery machinery and participate in smelting and refining activities during the initial phase of operations. Develop, implement, and optimize production schedules and operational procedures to maximize efficiency and output. Monitor and control production costs, raw material consumption, and energy usage. Ensure the consistent production of high-quality gold products meeting specified purity standards. Safety & Compliance: Establish and enforce stringent safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel. Ensure full compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including waste management and emissions. Maintain all necessary licenses and permits for refinery operations. Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments. Team Leadership & Development: Actively participate in hands-on operations while preparing to recruit, train, mentor, and manage a team of refinery technicians and operators as the operation scales. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork. Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback and development opportunities. Maintenance & Asset Management: Oversee the maintenance and repair of all refinery equipment, machinery, and infrastructure. Implement preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend asset lifespan. Manage inventory of critical spare parts and consumables. Process Improvement & Innovation: Identify opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and efficiency gains. Stay abreast of industry best practices, new technologies, and advancements in gold refining and smelting. Lead initiatives for technological upgrades and process enhancements. Consultation & Global Support: Provide expert consultation and support for our overseas mining and refining operations as needed. Collaborate with international teams to ensure consistent best practices and operational excellence across all locations. Reporting & Analysis: Prepare detailed production reports, cost analyses, and performance metrics for senior management. Analyze operational data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and make informed decisions. Qualifications: Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in refinery management, smelting operations, or a closely related field, with a strong focus on gold. Demonstrated hands-on experience with refinery machinery operation and metal smelting is essential. Education: Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related technical field. A Master's degree is a plus. Legal Status: Must be a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States. Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of various gold refining methods (e.g., aqua regia, electrolytic refining, chlorination). Proven expertise in smelting processes, furnace operations, and precious metal recovery techniques. Understanding of chemical processes, material science, and analytical techniques relevant to gold refining. Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and manage a technical team. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Safety & Environmental Acumen: Thorough understanding of industrial safety regulations and environmental compliance standards. Proven track record of implementing and maintaining robust safety programs. Other: Proficiency in relevant software and data analysis tools. Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Willingness to perform hands-on operational tasks, including operating machinery and smelting metal, particularly during the initial phase of the refinery's establishment. Ability and willingness to travel internationally for consultation and support of overseas operations. Preferred Skills (Nice to Have): Experience with lean manufacturing principles or Six Sigma methodologies. Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001). Experience with project management for facility upgrades or expansions.
