POSITION TITLE: Museum Host-Research Assistant

LOCATION: Angels Camp, California

STATUS: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

STARTING SALARY: $25.56-$30.10, hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Museum Host / Research Assistant will be the point person for the public during museum open hours. They will maintain the basic operations of the museum regarding orientation to the museum grounds, customer service, and sales. They will fulfill the role of research assistant to answer the public’s requests for research from the archive and will support the Museum Director in basic collections organization.

The position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of American Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs and the ability at all times to meet and deal effectively in contacts with Indian health organizations which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Museum Director with tasks and directives related to museum operations, including but not limited to opening and closing of the museum.
  • Greeting visitors and orienting them to the museum grounds.
  • Selling admission tickets.
  • Assisting patrons in the gift shop and completing sales.
  • Assist with museum tours: educational and large groups.
  • Submit work tickets to facilities should any museum building and grounds problems arise.
  • Assist with changing displays: relocation and storage of items.
  • Catalogue and organize items and new donations to the archive.
  • Record comments and complaints about the museum and its displays.
  • Help to orient volunteers and docents.
  • Answer calls to the museum.
  • Ability to work with Native visitors in a compassionate and knowledgeable way.
  • Track offered donations to the museum and submit reports to Museum Director.
  • Digitize archival materials.
  • Research questions presented by the public in a timely manner.
  • Assist researchers during their visits, have materials ready and schedule future visits .
  • Assist in the rotation and graphic design of temporary exhibits.
  • Assist in the scheduling of classes and workshops.
  • Assist with fundraising events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience in the museum field

2. Minimum education preference of an AA Degree in Humanities or currently working toward obtaining an AA Degree

3. Basic understanding of Miwok culture.

4. Retail experience

5. Strong customer service skills.

6. Able to work weekends.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be a qualified American Indian.
  2. Must pass Occupational Health Screening.
  3. Must possess a valid form of identification as listed on the U.S. Department of Justice I-9 form, verified using the E Verify system.
  4. Clean DMV driving record and MACT auto insurance driving eligibility (determined by auto insurance carrier).
  5. Valid CA Driver’s license and automobile insurance.

  5. Confidentiality of all data, including patient, employee and operations data.
  6. Quality Assurance and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  7. Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from sexual harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.
  8. Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate judgment.
