Job Description POSITION PURPOSE The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance in the daily inspection, preventative maintenance, and repair of the mechanical and electrical equipment at the lift stations.
Position's work week consists of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lift station mechanics are required to be in a rotation for emergency stand-by calls.
Essential Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Exercise valves, maintains and repairs lift station motors, pumps, meters, generators and other major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic units of equipment, and physical structure in accordance with blueprints or manuals. Dismantles machinery or equipment to gain access to defective parts and repairs or replaces them using various tools. Cleans and lubricates equipment according to the manufacture's recommendations.
- Inspects each station as required, reads flow meters and gauges, generator run hours, electric meters, and records them. Must be able to interpret status of station.
- Puts holding tanks in and out of service in high flow or maintenance situations.
- Performs preventative maintenance on lift station equipment and keeps records of work done on equipment.
- Performs general station maintenance to keep stations in neat and orderly fashion.
- Works in conjunction with the sewer cleaning crew and plant staff to identify abnormal and high flow situations, as well as causes for lift station alarms and malfunctions.
- Navigates a computer screen, and interprets SCADA system and GIS data. Works with computerized maintenance program work orders and updating of computer information.
- Must become familiar with The Capacity, Management, Operations and Maintenance Program (CMOM), and understand the ramifications of a by-pass in the collection system. Must become familiar with the Racine collection system and safety sites.
- Sets up 6-inch portable pumps and generators.
- Plumbing and welding, as required.
- Trained in confined space entry regulations and is able to make entries.
- Adheres to all Racine Wastewater Utility safety procedures as well as Utility work and safety rules.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - High School graduation, or GED equivalent is required.
- 5 years of prior verifiable professional mechanical experience working with pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines in an area related to industrial plant or commercial automotive maintenance; or a combination of years and education is preferred.
- Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, pipefitting or electro-mechanical technology is a plus.
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Collection Systems Subgrade (SS) certification is required within 1 year of hire.
- Good computer skills, including working knowledge of SCADA systems, City Works, and GIS software.
- A valid state-issued motor vehicle operating license and Class B CDL with a tanker endorsement is required within 6 months.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Ability to apply good work practices by planning work and utilizing materials efficiently.
- Ability to plow snow and perform landscape duties.
- Skill in analyzing, diagnosing, correcting mechanical failures and defects; including a working knowledge of mechanical functions, principles and techniques.
- Must have good mechanical aptitude, verifiable by past work experience.

- Ability to utilize, interpret, and apply a variety of advisory data and information such as instructional pamphlets, blueprints, line diagrams, meters, gauges, operation and maintenance manuals, charts, and graphs.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with varied and diverse contacts, such as utility personnel, vendor representatives, and the general public.
- Ability to understand and follow specific written and oral instructions; and perform duties with minimum direct supervision.
- Ability to professionally represent the utility in response to emergencies.
Judgement and Situational Reasoning
- Ability to apply rational and ethical judgment, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with utility personnel, public customers, contractors, and vendors.
Physical Requirements
- Must have good dexterity with ability to hand operate power equipment and tools.
- Ability to exert strenuous physical effort to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs., typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Twisting and crouching and working at odd angles is required.
- Ability to read meters, gauges, and computer screens; and ability to interpret sound and odor.
- Must have good dexterity and be in good physical condition with ability to enter confined spaces.
- Work well under pressure; the position can be extremely demanding during high flow conditions, with ability to work longer than an eight-hour day and the requirement to be rotated on call during off hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as goggles, face shields, gloves, boots, steel-toed shoes, masks, respirators, and ear plugs or ear muffs.
Work Environment and Conditions
- Ability to work outdoors under severe weather conditions; hot and cold; rain, snow, sleet, wind, and sun.
- Ability to walk extensively, often while carrying tools and supplies. Ability to work in a standing position for long stretches of time, and ability to work in cramped spaces.
- Ability to work in less than desirable conditions (such as sewers, wet wells, siphon chambers, tunnels, and basins) under potentially moderately unsafe and uncomfortable conditions, where exposure to environmental factors such as odors, dampness, chemicals, noise, pathogenic organisms, electrical currents, and/or dusts can cause a risk of injury; step and ladder climbing with fall hazards, slip and trip hazards, and large water basins with fall and drowning risk.
EQUIPMENT USED: - Hand tools, power tools, welder, hoists, gas torch, power washer, steam cleaner, fire hoses, shovels, snow blowers, power vehicles, Bobcat, fork lift, hoists, step ladders, extension ladders, hydraulic lifts, electronic diagnostic equipment, manhole cover removing device, confined space entry equipment, gas detector, computers, lifting equipment/crane, and miscellaneous tools and equipment.
- Software technology used may include maintenance software, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Antero Maintenance Tracking Software, City Works, GIS, Time Management Software (TMS); other software may be applied.
