Overview

A Reimbursement Specialist is a medical professional responsible for managing the administrative responsibilities of billing insurance and processing payments for clients. A Reimbursement Specialist handles Accounts Receivable, corrects and resubmits claims, and communicates with patients about outstanding balances to ensure procedures are paid by their insurance company. They should be experienced with billing software and medical insurance policies.

Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, office staff, and providers
  • Confirm patient benefits and insurance eligibility
  • Follow and adhere to all regulations and guidelines set by state programs
  • Review charges prior to submission
  • Review clearinghouse rejection reports, correct errors, and resubmit
  • Interpret diagnostic and procedural terms used by healthcare providers and code them accordingly
  • Translate information into coded form by locating codes using coding manuals or software
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding
  • Transfer insurance claims and billing data to billing software
  • Update billing software with rate changes
  • Create paper and electronic claims for transmission
  • Follow up on late payments and issue late payment notices
  • Monitor and resolve financial discrepancies
  • Run weekly accounts reports and keep information accurate
  • Verify all claims and ensure edits are resolved in a timely fashion
  • Run reports on denials and correct to resubmit claims
  • Examine patient bills for accuracy and request any missing information
  • Contact patients with unpaid medical bills and negotiate payment plans or settlements
  • Respond to inquiries regarding billing and account matters
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information and adhere to HIPAA guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of business and accounting, or Health Care Administration; Billing and Coding Certification preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a medical biller or similar role
  • Solid understanding of billing software and electronic medical records
  • Ability to multitask and manage time effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational abilities
